In brief
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, demonstrates diplomatic skill and resilience in handling U.S.-Mexico relations, winning admiration from President Trump despite her limited foreign policy experience.
With a trade war looming, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently received unexpected praise from President Trump, who labeled her "tough" during a phone call last month, according to knowledgeable sources. In a rare exchange of compliments, the two leaders engaged in discussions that might lead to relief from some tariffs.Taking office on October 1, Sheinbaum marked history as not only the first woman to govern Mexico but faced skepticism regarding her ability to manage U.S. relations, particularly if Trump was reelected. Known for her scientific background and leftist ideology as opposed to her predecessor’s brash persona, Sheinbaum initially appeared to lack the foreign policy experience required for the job. However, analysts are surprised at her effectiveness in confronting Trump's aggressive stance and forging a peaceful connection with him. Carlos Bravo Regidor, a political analyst from Mexico, remarked, “Nobody expected her to be this good, or this lucky. Whatever it is, it’s working.” Despite being deemed a reserved technocrat, Sheinbaum has impressed many by not only maintaining composure against Trump’s threats but also by developing a budding mutual respect with her American counterpart, suggesting that her administration's foreign relations strategy may be yielding surprising results.
