In brief

President Macron confirms the attack's terrorist nature, reaffirming government commitment to combat extremism.

The city of Mulhouse was shaken on Saturday when a man embarked on a brutal stabbing spree during a market visit, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. President Emmanuel Macron did not mince words, categorizing the attack as “an Islamist terrorist attack.” Calling for a strong response, he assured that the government remains resolute in its fight against terrorism within France. The frightening event took place in Mulhouse, approximately 70 miles south of Strasbourg, near France’s borders with Germany and Switzerland. Eyewitness accounts describe the assailant, a 37-year-old man, shouting “Allahu akbar” as he launched his attack. France's antiterrorism unit reported that while the phrase signifies a common religious exclamation, it has been co-opted by some extremists in acts of violence. Tragically, a civilian attempting to intervene was killed, while three police officers sustained injuries, two of them quite serious. According to local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, the attacker was already on France’s terrorist watch list, being monitored for possible radicalization. This individual had previously been mandated to leave French territory after being denied residency or asylum. In a poignant statement, Michèle Lutz, the mayor of Mulhouse, expressed the collective horror and shock felt by the community, emphasizing the emotional toll of such violence. The investigation continues as authorities work to gather more information and secure the area from future threats.
