In brief

In response to a New York Times expose, Premier Doug Ford of Ontario announced on Wednesday that he is initiating a review of a 95-year lease granted to the European wellness firm, Therme. The deal includes plans for a spa and water park on an artificial island off Toronto's waterfront. Reports revealed that Therme misrepresented the number of its operational facilities during the bidding process, leading Ford to demand a re-evaluation to ensure integrity in the contract.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has taken action following a disturbing investigation regarding a lengthy lease signed with a European spa company. On April 16, 2025, Ford expressed his intent to scrutinize the agreement that permits the Austrian-based firm, Therme, to build and manage a wellness center on an artificial island situated in Lake Ontario, just off Toronto's shores. The decision arises after a New York Times article revealed that Therme had inflated its operational experience during the bidding stage. The spa company only owned a single facility in Romania, despite claiming to manage multiple venues across Europe in its submission. Upon hearing these allegations, Ford promptly urged his government officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the legitimacy of the contract. "I just want to double- and triple-check the contract," Ford stated in a media briefing. He emphasized the necessity of confirming that the agreement is sound and meets ethical standards. A representative from Therme has yet to provide a response regarding these serious claims.
