In brief

Israeli military operations in Gaza ramp up, targeting previously safe zones, leading to chaos and fears among local residents.

In a significant escalation of military operations, the Israeli Defense Forces have expanded their offensive in central Gaza, specifically targeting the city of Deir al-Balah. This area had largely remained untouched during the ongoing conflict with Hamas and had become a refuge for Palestinians dislocated by the violence. Reports indicate that Israeli troops launched a raid on a World Health Organization (WHO) facility in Deir al-Balah on Monday. During the operation, male staff members and their families were reportedly detained and mistreated by Israeli soldiers, according to WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Women and children were forcibly evacuated south amid the chaos. The Israeli military confirmed the raid, claiming that its personnel were shot at during the operation but insisted that any suspects detained were treated according to international law. Despite previous assertions that hostages were being held in Deir al-Balah, Israeli operations spread into the area after warnings were issued for residents to evacuate due to life-threatening conditions. On Sunday, the military's communications warned of imminent risks, prompting fears that a ground offensive was forthcoming. Although major strikes and operations have been conducted around the city, it remains uncertain how deeply the military will penetrate into the heavily populated urban center. Many residents, fearful for their safety, have already begun fleeing the area.
