In brief

In an interview, Musk reveals his frustration with the recently passed tax and spending legislation by Trump, challenging its implications for federal budget management and fiscal responsibility.

Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, has expressed his discontent regarding one of President Donald Trump’s key legislative proposals, the "big, beautiful" tax and spending bill. Passed narrowly by the US House of Representatives, the bill promises substantial tax cuts and increased defence spending, yet has drawn criticism even from some of Trump's allies. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk stated he was “disappointed” by the bill, arguing that it ultimately “undermines” the financial restraint efforts he worked on with Trump. Musk had previously taken on the role of cost-cutting tsar, advocating for limits on federal spending, including cuts to foreign aid. He has announced intentions to cut back on his political contributions as well.“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly,” Musk remarked. He believes that the legislation is positioned to deepen the budget deficit, suggesting that it could increase by as much as $600 billion in the coming fiscal year. This significant figure highlights concerns that the proposed bill would not lead to a decrease in the deficit, as it purportedly aims to.Adding to the complexity of his relationship with Trump, Musk stated that the plan “undermines” the initiatives of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which he has been involved with. He cast skepticism on the effectiveness of the bill's title, stating, “I think a bill can be big or beautiful. I don't know if it can be both.”As Trump's tax and spend strategy continues to face internal backlash within the party, Musk’s criticisms signal a potential rift, especially as he vows to reduce his political engagement in the future. Musk's previous financial support was pivotal in reinstating Trump to the presidency, although recent statements indicate a shift in priorities. The bill, long championed by Trump, seeks to extend tax cuts from his first term while also funneling resources into defense and other areas, including immigration enforcement. Musk's remarks suggest an increasing divergence from Trump’s fiscal policies, raising questions about future alignments within the Republican Party amid ongoing budgetary debates.
