In a significant development, four police officers in France have been ordered to stand trial for the assault of Michel Zecler, a prominent music producer, in November 2020. This incident, which garnered widespread attention after being recorded on a security camera, has intensified the national conversation surrounding police brutality.

Although the investigative judges decided to drop charges of racial motivation against two officers, asserting there wasn’t enough evidence to substantiate claims that they used racial slurs during the altercation, the maximum penalties they face remain unchanged. Zecler's legal team has expressed disappointment over the decision, emphasizing that other evidence supports his account.

Three of the officers are accused of physically assaulting Zecler at his music studio in Paris and subsequently filing a misleading police report, which falsely claimed he had violently resisted arrest. This discrepancy was highlighted by the footage from the camera that contradicted their version of events.

The charges against the officers primarily involve forgery and aggravated assault. If convicted, they could face up to 15 years in prison along with a hefty fine of €225,000 (approximately $264,000). The officers have been identified only by their last names, Aurélien L., Philippe T., and Pierre P., in accordance with French privacy laws.
