In brief

"The young videographer, who witnessed the tragic incident, now faces trauma and media attention as investigators work to uncover the crash's cause."

In a tragic turn of events, 17-year-old Aryan Asari from Ahmedabad, India, has found himself at the center of a media storm after filming the devastating crash of an Air India Dreamliner 787-8. The incident occurred last Thursday shortly after the plane took off, tragically claiming the lives of 241 passengers on board and nearly 30 others on the ground.Aryan, who has a passion for spotting airplanes, was on the terrace of his father's home when he noticed the aircraft descending in an alarming manner. "I saw the plane wobbling and then it crashed right before my eyes," he recounted in an interview with BBC Gujarati. His footage has since become crucial evidence for investigators as they work to determine the causes behind this catastrophic event. The crash has profoundly impacted Aryan, who is now struggling with trauma from the experience. "He is so scared that he has stopped using his phone," his father, Maganbhai Asari, lamented. The Asari family hopes for a return to normalcy, but Aryan's experience remains fresh in their minds, especially considering it was his first time in Ahmedabad, having visited with his sister for a brief family trip.On the day of the disaster, Aryan and his elder sister arrived at their father's home to spend time together. Shortly after having lunch, he stepped outside to film airplanes, reveling in his newfound hobby. Suddenly, he captured the unfolding disaster. "It was shaking; moving left and right," he explained, confused until the reality of the crash hit him. He texted a video to his father, who was at work, and his terrified voice revealed the gravity of the situation.Since the horrific event, the Asari household has been besieged by media attention, and police also visited to record Aryan’s statement. However, contrary to reports of detention, Mr. Asari clarified that Aryan was not held but had been questioned to assist the investigation. Now back in their ancestral village, Aryan has returned to school, yet the specter of that day looms large. Every phone call sends him into a state of fear, and his father recognizes that despite their efforts, the incident has left a lasting mark on his son. "I know he will be fine with time, but I don't think my son will ever look for airplanes in the sky again," Mr. Asari said somberly. As investigations continue to probe the factors leading to the Air India crash, Aryan’s eyewitness account serves as a crucial piece of the puzzle, tragically entwining his fate with one of India’s gravest aviation disasters.
