In brief

Despite unprecedented discussions involving world leaders, actual peace remains out of reach as fighting continues.

It's 2:30 AM, and I find myself navigating the expansive and labyrinthine grounds of the Kremlin, feeling oddly like a character out of a John le Carré spy novel. My evening had begun with an invitation to a mysterious event featuring President Vladimir Putin. As time dwindled, anticipation built until Putin finally appeared—not for a press conference as expected, but to deliver a statement on live television. His proposal was for direct talks with Ukraine—an announcement that immediately sparked a whirlwind of diplomatic activity.Fast forward a fortnight. What began with late-night Kremlin statements spiraled into peace talks in Turkey and a high-profile phone call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. However, as the dust settles, one has to wonder: Are we really closer to peace in Ukraine? It hardly seems that way. While Russia has hinted at potential negotiations, no willingness to embrace an unconditional ceasefire has emerged. It remains adamantly opposed to returning territory it has occupied. Instead of progress, we find ourselves entangled in a complex game, reminiscent of my late-night confusion within the Kremlin's walls. The past two weeks have highlighted Russia's adeptness at managing its geopolitical challenges and sidestepping pressure. Following an ultimatum from European leaders for a ceasefire, Russia proposed talks, skillfully shifting the narrative and delaying the threat of sanctions. While the talks held in Istanbul produced little more than skepticism, they distracted from a mounting humanitarian crisis. In a conversation with Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, it became evident that there are doubters about future agreements with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky. With the constant undermining of Zelensky's legitimacy by Russian officials, it seems evident that Moscow may not consider a peace treaty if the existing leadership in Ukraine remains intact. As the Russian media boasts of their diplomatic gains—some outlets declaring Russia's ace in this "global poker game"—it’s clear they believe they hold the upper hand, bolstered, in part, by Trump's diplomatic approach and reluctance to impose additional sanctions. However, despite sporadic criticism of Moscow, Trump continues to position himself as a potential mediator, seemingly at odds with the urgency for a meaningful resolution to the conflict. The Kremlin perceives a favorable dynamic, believing that American dialogue with Russia is not contingent upon the peace process. While the threat of sanctions looms, Russia has navigated pressures skillfully so far, remaining confident they will not have to make significant concessions. As we reflect on the whirlwind of diplomatic activity, the plight of Ukraine continues, with clarity on a peaceful resolution proving more elusive by the day.
