In brief

In a profound encounter with Mullah Osman Jawhari, the commander behind a pivotal assault on U.S. forces, journalist Azam Ahmed seeks to unveil the perspectives and realities often obscured in the coverage of the Afghanistan War.

The Taliban commander donned sunglasses and a heavy wool coat, indicating he might depart at any given moment. Our first meeting took place in a guesthouse on a bustling street during the winter of 2022, where a table spread with untouched lamb and rice sat between us. The sounds of merchants and the chaos of traffic filtered through an open window as I shared my reasoning for tracking him down.More than a decade prior, Mullah Osman Jawhari had led 150 Taliban fighters during the siege of an American base nestled in the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains. That assault led to the death of nine soldiers and injuries to over twenty others, marking it as one of the deadliest confrontations of the U.S. engagement in Afghanistan, famously known as the Battle of Want (or Wanat). Astonishingly, he had survived amidst the carnage, a rarity for midlevel Taliban commanders during the endless warfare. For over two decades, American journalists, myself included as a former Kabul bureau chief, predominantly outlined one facet of the war. Much of Afghanistan remained inaccessible, and the Taliban's narrative was often restricted to their own propaganda. Consequently, many essential facets of the conflict remained obscure.I had studied all the after-action reports and assessments regarding the Battle of Want but now, as the echoes of gunfire faded, I was compelled to unearth the realities that had been left untold. My quest was simple yet profound: to glean insight into what led to the disarray that enveloped the United States' efforts in Afghanistan, and the ramifications for the Afghan populace, especially women, who continued to endure through these turbulent times.
