Trump unveils 'Super Intelligence Force' to oversee AI policy
US President Donald Trump says he has created a new taskforce focused on artificial intelligence, which will be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton.
Named the 'Super Intelligence Force', the taskforce is designed to maintain U.S. leadership in AI development while overseeing the government’s engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations, critical infrastructure providers and AI companies.
The force will report directly to the President and to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Clayton, who took his post in August after the original nominee was rejected, is also joined by FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael and OPM Director Scott Kupor.
Trump’s announcement follows an executive order issued last month that re‑brands the term artificial intelligence as 'Super Intelligence', instructing federal agencies to use the new terminology in all official documents and communications.
Industry leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have largely endorsed continued innovation without heavy regulation, whereas figures like Elon Musk publicly embraced the new name, calling his company a 'super intelligence company' and renaming SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI.
Critics argue that the rebranding could confuse the public, while supporters think it better reflects advanced AI capabilities. Trump has dismissed calls for stronger oversight, preferring to leave regulation largely in the hands of AI firms.
