WASHINGTON (PulseWire) — President Donald Trump met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at the White House on Friday, discussing the possibility of granting Hungary an exemption from U.S. sanctions on Russian energy. Trump acknowledged the difficulties Hungary faces in sourcing oil and gas from alternative regions, given that it is a landlocked country.
Orbán labeled the energy issue `vital` for Hungary and expressed intentions to present several proposals to Trump regarding an exemption from sanctions, stating, `I’m not asking for some kind of gift from the Americans... I am simply asking for the realization that the sanctions recently imposed on Russian energy puts certain countries like Hungary, which do not have access to the sea, in an impossible situation.`
In tandem, prior to Orbán's arrival, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced a resolution urging Hungary to reduce its reliance on Russian energy. The resolution highlighted concerns that Hungary has not shown signs of decreasing this dependency, noting that **Europe has made extraordinary progress cutting its energy ties with Moscow**. Senator Jeanne Shaheen stated, `This resolution sends a clear message that when it comes to buying Russian energy, all allies should be held to the same standard, and that includes Hungary.`
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also announced plans to sign a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with the U.S. on the same day, marking Hungary's first-ever purchases of American nuclear fuel, which it currently acquires from Russia.
Earlier, Orbán had engaged with prominent figures and right-wing political influencers, reflecting Hungary's efforts to secure its energy future amid geopolitical challenges. He made a social media post supporting the Bolsonaro family amid their political struggles in Brazil.
