In brief
A Russian cruise missile strike on the Guinea‑Bissau‑flagged Golden Leo, a cargo vessel off Odesa, claimed 10 lives, including a pilot. The attack heightens Russia’s campaign against the Black Sea trade corridor that supplies two‑thirds of Ukraine’s grain exports. Ukrainian authorities are preparing security measures, bolstering naval defences, and urging safe navigation for civilian vessels amid rising threats. Odesa remains under threat despite its status as a tourist hub, while the conflict sees both sides launching more attacks on ships and logistics assets. The incident underscores the escalating maritime security crisis affecting civilian crews and economic stability.
On Sunday, a Russian cruise missile targeted the Golden Leo, a Guinea‑Bissau‑flagged cargo ship off Odesa, setting it ablaze and killing 10 crew members, including a pilot. The attack highlights the growing threat to Ukraine’s maritime export corridor that delivers more than two‑thirds of its grain to markets via Romanian and Bulgarian ports.
Odesa governor Oleh Kiper reported that 28 people died in Russian assaults on the region in July alone, underlining the intensity of shelling in a city that remains a holiday destination despite the conflict.
The Golden Leo’s strike is the deadliest cargo‑ship attack in the Black Sea this year. Russia’s campaign is believed to aim at deterring foreign firms from buying Ukrainian products and exploiting the sea lanes, thereby squeezing Kyiv’s key export revenue.
Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi stated that Ukraine is preparing measures to enhance the safety of navigation and protect civilian vessels and seafarers. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s drone forces commander reported that 183 vessels were struck in July, signalling a reciprocal increase in attacks on Russian assets in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In addition to maritime threats, Russian forces continue to target Ukrainian civil infrastructure, with recent drone strikes on buses and oil depots causing casualties and damage.
The ongoing conflict has a broader impact on global markets, as Ukraine’s grain exports—valued at roughly £6.7 bn ($9 bn) annually—are now at risk of disruption.
