In a move that has already sparked nationwide debate, the White House confirmed that conservative commentator Katie Zacharia has been offered the role of press secretary, set to replace Karoline Leavitt who left the post in August.

Zacharia, who has previously worked as a communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group and served briefly as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, is a familiar voice on right‑wing cable and digital platforms. She joined Trump’s Truth Social in June last year and has spouted support for the former president on dozens of shows.
The White House confirmed the offer to BBC News after Leavitt’s announcement of an exit to take a position with Fox News. Zacharia’s appointment is seen as a move to tighten the alignment between Trump’s media empire and the administration’s communications strategy.
The role of press secretary involves more than a daily briefing room; it requires navigating contentious relationships with the press, coordinating with other White House offices, and providing media advice to the president. An office under the secretary’s purview receives a large volume of inquiries and requests on a daily basis.
Zacharia has yet to comment on the offer publicly, but officials say she is being evaluated for the role. She will be the sixth person to hold the post in the president’s two administrations.
