In brief
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, has been discharged from hospital following a successful emergency surgery addressing a brain bleed, a consequence of a fall experienced in October 2023.
Lula appeared with his medical team in front of reporters at São Paulo's Sírio-Libanês hospital, stating, "This here is not an interview, this is simply a session to say thanks," emphasizing gratitude to God and those who supported him through prayers. After complaining of severe headaches, he underwent a craniotomy—the removal of a portion of the skull to alleviate pressure from the bleed—following his fall in the bathroom at Alvorada Palace.Doctors confirmed that Lula was in stable condition after the operation, lucid and in good spirits, and stated that there were no lasting effects from the surgery. His recovery has prompted expectations for him to return to Brasilia next week. In his absence, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin has assumed some presidential responsibilities. Lula indicated that the recent bleeding issue was linked to a blow to the head he suffered months prior, which can sometimes lead to delayed complications. While Lula's health concerns led to the cancellation of a scheduled trip to Russia for a Brics summit, he is eager to return to full duties. Lula, who resumed office in January 2023, has maintained a vibrant public persona, often stating he has "the energy of a 30-year-old."
