In brief
On New Year’s Day, a tragic attack on Bourbon Street claimed 14 lives, with ISIS claiming indirect influence while stopping short of claiming responsibility for the incident.
The Islamic State (ISIS) has publicly recognized the perpetrator of the New Orleans attack, which left 14 dead on Bourbon Street on New Year’s Day. In a recent digital bulletin, the group stated that the attacker, who drove a truck into a crowd, was “influenced by the discourse and messaging of the Islamic State,” showcasing its ongoing attempts to connect with potential sympathizers. The statement, obtained by the Counter Extremism Project, indicated that while the group did not claim direct responsibility, it noted a man inspired by their ideology carried out that tragic event. The bulletin appeared to mock media speculation regarding their expected proclamation of responsibility. The attacker, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, was a U.S. Army veteran from Texas, who also died during a confrontation with New Orleans police. He reportedly wore Meta glasses and drove a truck adorned with an ISIS flag. Prior to the attack, he left a disturbing recorded message for his relatives, stating his allegiance to the terrorist organization. Despite authorities denoting that Jabbar had no active links to ISIS, the FBI asserted he was “100 percent inspired by ISIS.” The exact nature of the online content he recorded is still unknown, reflecting the sophisticated media strategy ISIS employs through propelling its propaganda and maintaining ties with various factions.Joshua Fisher-Birch from the Counter Extremism Project remarked on ISIS's unusual claim this time, stating that while they often take responsibility for attacks, this incident was notable for its focus on inspiration rather than direct involvement. Experts noted that the group's continued emphasis on disseminating their messaging and encouraging future assaults during significant events reflects their ongoing recruitment strategies. As New Orleans mourns its loss, the chilling implications of this incident resonate deeply amid calls for increased vigilance and counterterrorism efforts.
