In brief
Peruvian cities are experiencing a spike in gang violence, with extortions and brutal attacks becoming part of daily life for many citizens, resulting in widespread fear and a desperate plea for safety.
Reports indicate that since 2017, extortion incidents have surged from a few hundred to over 2,000 per month. This alarming trend has been accompanied by a significant increase in killings orchestrated by hired assassins, leaving many residents feeling vulnerable and unsafe in their own communities. In Lima, Jorge Tejada, a recycling business owner, recalls a recent attack where a bus was set ablaze, a clear act of retaliation from gangs demanding payments from local transportation providers. The frequency of such attacks has left Tejada and his neighbors shaken and fearful for their lives. Just a year ago, their area was a peaceful neighborhood, now it has transformed into a hotspot for gang activity. Tejada’s own yard suffered damage after he refused a gang's demand for monthly payments. The situation has escalated, with many local shopkeepers choosing to go into hiding, and the murder of a local pharmacist further amplifying the threat. Across Peru, communities are grappling with escalating crime rates and the shadow of gang influence, prompting a growing concern among citizens about their safety and the dire consequences of resisting violence and intimidation efforts. The community's prior efforts in growth and organization now seem overshadowed by fear and vulnerability. As the situation continues to deteriorate, many Peruvians are left wondering if their country will ever return to the peaceful existence they once knew.
