TUCSON, Ariz. — Sheriff Chris Nanos, leading the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie, expressed his frustration Friday over the failure to secure crucial surveillance footage from her home. The doorbell camera was found disconnected on the day she went missing, rendering any evidence captured irretrievable due to a lack of active subscription.
“It is concerning; it’s actually almost disappointing because you’ve got your hopes up,” Nanos said during an interview at the Pima County Sheriff's Department headquarters, noting the critical role footage could play in the grim search that has entered its sixth day.
While investigators believe Nancy Guthrie, 84, was taken against her will, the absence of suspects complicates efforts. A blood sample found on Guthrie’s porch matched her DNA, further heightening concerns over her welfare, particularly since she requires daily medication for health issues including high blood pressure.
Nanos revealed that while technology offers promising leads, it seldom delivers straightforward results. “I wish technology was as easy as we believe it is,” he remarked, reflecting on the limitations faced in the investigation.
Authorities are working diligently to gather evidence and maintain a level of confidentiality in the ongoing case, which has attracted national attention, including commentary from President Trump who pledged federal support for the investigation.
In a heartfelt video address, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings expressed their desperation, inviting the kidnapper to communicate regarding their mother’s safety. The family is waiting for proof that Nancy is alive amidst rising fears for her health.
The episode underscores a growing crime trend in missing elderly persons, drawing public outcry and support for the Guthries as the community rallies around the family.
As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for Nancy Guthrie's safe return, while investigators are left piecing together clues from a complicated criminal puzzle.
