Senior South African Police Officer Survives Assassination Attempt

In Johannesburg, Deputy Crime Intelligence Commander Maj‑Gen Feroz Khan was shot during a drive home on Sunday evening, but he survived after emergency surgery. The incident occurred just days before he was due to testify at the Madlanga Commission, a national inquiry into police corruption.

Khan, who was recently arrested in May on charges of illegal gold dealing, was not yet released when the shooting took place. The police have confirmed they are investigating the attack, but have not linked it to his upcoming testimony.

The commission was established after Lt‑Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused organised crime groups of infiltrating the police in a 2023 statement. Khan’s name surfaced in the inquiry not only for the gold case but also for alleged involvement with a botched 2021 drug bust and potential ties to political figures.

Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said on Monday the investigation is underway and cautioned against speculating on motives, especially given the proximity to the inquiry. “Premature and irresponsible,” she added.

This is the second time a witness connected with the Madlanga commission has been targeted. Earlier in December a witness was killed in front of his family after giving testimony.

Khan remains on bail and has not commented on the allegations or the shooting. The inquiry will continue to probe systemic corruption, with a focus on the alleged illegal gold dealing and broader criminal networks within the force.
