Background and Cause of Death
Washington DC’s medical examiner announced that Senator Lindsey Graham died of an “aortic dissection” caused by cardiovascular disease. Aortic dissection is a tear in the main artery that supplies blood to the heart. The fatal tear occurred within the final hours of his life.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
Graham was 71 and had just returned from a trip to Kyiv. On Friday he met President Volodymyr Zelensky with whom he discussed U.S. support for Ukraine. That evening, he experience pain that escalated dramatically until the medical examiner confirmed aortic rupture.
His spokesperson reported that a death certificate would only be issued once all toxicological and microscopic tests were completed.
Political Impact
Graham had long been a key driver of U.S. military intervention. He was a strong critic of Iran in the past but supported President Trump’s positions on border security and the appointment of conservative judges. After his passing, Governor Henry McMaster has the authority to appoint a temporary replacement who will serve until the seat is filled in the November election.
Republicans currently hold a 53‑47 majority over Democrats in the Senate. The Senate race is pivotal for congressional control in the 2026 mid‑terms.
Reactions
Zelensky issued a statement on X saying, “Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applauded Graham’s dedication to security partnership between the U.S. and Israel.
Other politicians described Graham’s death as a “brightening loss for a turbulent era,” noting his shift from an early Trump critic to a staunch ally.
