In brief

Russia has unleashed a wave of ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, killing one person and wounding at least 14 civilians, officials report. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 18 of 41 missiles and intercepted 108 drones, while the city’s mayor confirmed damage to residential and commercial buildings. In the same breath, Ukraine has intensified drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, targeting the major online retailer Wildberries in the Moscow region, resulting in heat waves and fires. The attack marks one of the largest missile onslaughts on Kyiv since the start of Russia’s full‑scale invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cites the assault as a response to earlier Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure and the broader war effort that has crippled vital energy supplies.

Russia has carried out a wave of ballistic missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, killing one person and wounding at least 14, officials say.

A number of areas in the region were hit overnight, and President Volodymyr Zelensky called it "one of the most massive ballistic attacks on Kyiv" since the start of Russia's full‑scale invasion.

The Ukrainian military said air defences shot down 18 of 41 missiles, while the systems also intercepted 108 drones.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued its own assault on Russian sites. The governor of the south‑western Stavropol region reported a drone attack caused a fire in an industrial park.

The latest strikes on Kyiv involved a range of Russian systems, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, as well as 125 drones, the Ukrainian air force said.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed that both residential and non‑residential buildings were damaged, citing a supermarket and a dormitory among the sites hit.

Firefighters have been battling blazes at two warehouses while the city braces for further damage.

In a Telegram message, Zelensky highlighted that in the past week Russia had "used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine".

The overnight strikes followed Ukraine sending drones to destroy two warehouses belonging to Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries, which killed eight people and caused major fires.

Seven deaths and 25 injuries occurred at a facility in Tambov, about 295 miles southeast of Moscow. Another Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal near the capital suffered one death and 37 injuries.

Wildberries, often compared to Amazon, is valued at around $12.6bn. Ukraine recently increased long‑range drone attacks on Russia's critical energy infrastructure, causing widespread fuel shortages and disabling nearly 43% of Russia's oil refining capacity, a figure the BBC has not independently verified.

Ukraine justifies its strikes on Russian oil and gas facilities, citing Moscow's heavy reliance on fossil‑fuel exports to finance the invasion, which began in February 2022.
