In brief

Russia launched a wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, hitting cities from Kharkiv to Kyiv and causing eight fatalities and dozens of injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the raid the largest ballistic assault since the 2022 invasion. In retaliation, Ukraine hit three Russian oil tankers and three depots in the Stavropol region, targeting Russia’s war economy. Kyiv’s air defences downed 18 of 41 missiles and 108 drones that night, while Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have continued to worsen the humanitarian toll.

Russia has carried out a wave of ballistic missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens, officials say.

Four people were killed in the north‑eastern city of Kharkiv, and an elderly woman died in the capital Kyiv. Two more fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia and one in Sumy.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the Kyiv raid as “one of the most massive ballistic attacks” since Russia launched a full‑scale invasion in 2022.

Late on Sunday, the Ukrainian navy reported five deaths when a Turkish‑owned grain cargo ship hit by Russian missiles sank in the Black Sea. Russia has not issued a statement.

Meanwhile, Ukraine said it had struck three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and three oil depots in southern Stavropol, aiming to target the finances of the Russian war effort.

Air defences in the Kyiv region shot down 18 of 41 missiles, while 108 drones were intercepted. Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov confirmed a postal terminal attack that killed four men.

Zelensky added in a Telegram post that over a week Russia had used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine.

During the same night, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said both residential and non‑residential buildings, a supermarket and a dormitory, were damaged.

Firefighters battled blazes at two warehouses, and a logistics hub in Bucha district was hit, injuring two people. The overnight strikes followed Ukraine’s drone raid that destroyed two Wildberries warehouses, killing eight people.

Wildberries, often described as the Russian equivalent of Amazon, was valued at about $12.6 bn in 2026. Ukraine has been intensifying long‑range drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, claiming that nearly 43 % of Russia’s oil refining capacity was disabled earlier this month.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities have forced Kyiv to seek additional ballistic missile interceptors from Europe, with President Zelensky stating, “Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now.”
