In brief

In a shocking move, the Trump administration has laid off the entire staff of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), jeopardizing aid for approximately 6.2 million Americans who rely on this assistance for heating and cooling their homes. Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors Association, expressed alarm, stating that the mass firings point to either incompetence or a move to end the vital program.

On April 2, 2025, 25 employees managing the $4.1 billion program were let go during a broader reshuffle at the Department of Health and Human Services, where Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is enacting significant changes. Although Congress allocated $4.1 billion for fiscal year 2025—most of which has already been distributed to aid households struggling with soaring heating costs—roughly $378 million remains intended for summer cooling programs. States utilize LIHEAP funding to alleviate energy burdens on low-income families, particularly in regions facing extreme weather challenges exacerbated by climate change.
