In brief

Nabatieh's beloved market, once a vibrant hub, now lies in ruins following the recent Israeli bombardments that have impacted the lives of its community.

In a heart-wrenching scene, the business owners in Nabatieh, Lebanon are banding together to salvage what remains of their cherished market, devastated by Israeli air raids. Once thriving with life and commerce, the historic souk is now a landscape of twisted metal and shattered dreams. On a cold December morning, shop owners gathered amid the debris, driven by the desire to reclaim anything left from their pulverized businesses. They navigated through rubble, salvaging remnants of their livelihoods. One photo studio owner desperately sought to recover dust-covered negatives while a clothing vendor retrieved leggings from under shattered rebar. Raed Mokaled, a 58-year-old owner of an optical store, lamented the loss of everything he had built, stating, “An orange ball of fire took out everything.”The renewed conflict began in late September when Israel launched a series of air raids followed by a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, in retaliation against Hezbollah for its attacks that aligned with Hamas after the October 7 terror strikes in Israel. Although a tenuous 60-day truce was established in November, the damage done to these local businesses is irreparable, with many residents still grappling to process their loss.As the community now faces a long road to recovery, the resilience of Nabatieh’s inhabitants shines through their collective efforts to restore their beloved market, once a cornerstone of local commerce and culture.
