In brief
In a rare glimpse into Ethiopia's ongoing turmoil, civilians recount the harrowing realities of war, highlighting the resilience and suffering of those caught in the conflict.
During the late 2020 onset of war in Ethiopia, the lives of many citizens were irrevocably changed. Among them is Mehari, a 25-year-old doctor from Axum in Tigray, who drastically altered her life due to escalating violence. As public transportation ceased during the conflict, Mehari resorted to a grueling 40-minute walk to and from work while navigating a landscape dominated by military curfews and fear. "Every day felt like a race against time," she recounted, always glancing over her shoulder, haunted by the notion that being found by armed soldiers after dark could result in fatal consequences. The abrupt transition to warfare became evident for Mehari on the very night of the outbreak, an ordeal that propelled her from a hospital dedicated to healing traffic accident victims to the chaos of treating battle wounds. “When patients flooded in amid the blackout, it was my first real encounter with the aftermath of war,” she said, illustrating the stark contrast of her previous experiences. The influx of traumatized individuals seeking refuge from violence and loss made it overwhelming for her to absorb the painful narratives of families disrupted and lives lost.Ethiopia’s civil war is marked by intricate ethnic divisions. When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was elected in 2018 on a promise of reform, it initiated a shift from nearly three decades of leading with a Tigrayan majority. Political tension escalated when Ethiopian troops clashed with forces tied to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, a veteran ruling party resisting Abiy's overtures towards integration and peace. The violent rift, which began with a military engagement, has since drawn in various regional fighters and has been marred by accusations of atrocities committed on both sides. As the situation spiraled, citizens like Mehari found their lives intertwined with the conflict, demonstrating the complexities of loyalty, trauma, and resilience amid ongoing turmoil. Amid stark realities and a deeply affected populace, the plight of countless Ethiopians continues, marked by stories of courage, desperation, and the quest for peace.
