Iran has filed a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross demanding the release of three pilots it says were captured by Qatar after two fighter jets were shot down during the early days of the US‑Iran war.
The letter, signed by Brigadier General Mohammad Bagherzadeh, names the pilots as Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian and states they have been held for six months. It also mentions a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, whose body was returned following his death on 2 March 2026 during the same operation.
Qatar’s foreign‑affairs spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, categorically denied the claims, describing them as "misleading" and asserting that the country had acted in accordance with international law. He said contact had been made after the pilots violated Qatari airspace, but no response was received.
Al Ansari explained that Qatar’s search and rescue teams had searched for the pilots’ remains to the fullest extent, and that Qatar had contacted Iran to coordinate the handover of one recovered body, though Tehran had yet to respond to the invitation.
The dispute escalates tensions amid ongoing military engagements and diplomatic friction surrounding the broader conflict between the United States, Iran, and allied forces in the region.
