WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has granted a pardon to legendary former New York Mets player Darryl Strawberry for his previous convictions related to tax evasion and drug offenses. The pardon highlights Strawberry's turnaround after he embraced Christianity and achieved long-term sobriety.
Strawberry, known for his exceptional baseball career with eight All-Star appearances, including seven with the Mets, accumulated impressive statistics over 17 seasons, including 335 home runs and 1,000 RBIs. However, his life was marred by legal troubles and personal challenges post-career, leading to his 1995 felony conviction for failing to report significant earnings from autographs and public appearances.
The former star accepted a plea deal, paying over $430,000 back for owed taxes, and faced further legal issues leading to probation and brief prison time for drug possession and solicitation charges. His battle against colon cancer in 1998 was another personal trial that he overcame.
After serving just under a year in state prison, Strawberry has dedicated his life to faith and recovery, becoming active in ministry and founding a recovery center. A White House official voiced that Trump's decision to pardon was influenced by Strawberry's transformative journey, celebrating his commitment to sobriety and Christian faith.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Strawberry expressed his gratitude to Trump, recalling a phone call where the President warmly spoke of his baseball legacy and informed him of the pardon. “I was overwhelmed with gratitude — thanking God for setting me free from my past,” he shared, underscoring that the pardon extends beyond politics; it represents a personal and spiritual renewal.
Strawberry's remarkable journey also entailed public declarations of regret towards his past mistakes and his heartfelt messages at ceremonies honoring him, emphasizing the significance of redemption and change.
With this pardon, Strawberry joins a series of high-profile figures who have received clemency from Trump, reflecting a focus on second chances and personal redemption.
