In a remarkable political upheaval, Seychelles has elected opposition leader Patrick Herminie as its new president, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan in a tightly contested runoff election.

Herminie secured 52.7% of the votes, while Ramkalawan received 47.3%, according to the official results released by the electoral commission. This election marks a significant shift in the archipelago's political climate.

In his victory address, Herminie emphasized his commitment to reducing the cost of living, revitalizing public services, and fostering unity among the Seychellois people. He stated, This result represents a new chapter for all Seychellois, pledging to be a president for all citizens.

After his defeat, Ramkalawan congratulated Herminie, admitting the loss and expressing pride in his presidency, stating, I leave a legacy that makes many presidents blush. This election was called after a runoff was necessary when no candidate achieved an outright majority in the initial round two weeks prior.

Before running for office, Herminie faced challenges, including a politically motivated witchcraft charge in 2023, which was eventually dropped in 2024, clearing his path to candidacy. He assured voters that he would work towards bridging the divisions within the country, committing to provide equal opportunities for all.

Ramkalawan's loss is part of a broader trend, as he follows other African leaders, such as Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera, who were ousted amid frustration over rising living costs.

Herminie's party, United Seychelles, regained substantial power in the parliamentary elections last month, showcasing a shift in the political landscape after previously losing control to Ramkalawan's Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS).
