In brief

In a captivating exploration of Sardinia, a photographer immerses herself in the island's unique culture, picturesque landscapes, and the warmth of its people during a road trip along its breathtaking coastline.

As I drove into Cuglieri, a quaint town on Sardinia's western coast, I caught a glimpse of local life. Two women were engaged in conversation; one stood under the cool shade of a low building while the other, an elderly lady clad in black, responded from her third-floor balcony. Their interaction set the tone for my exploration of the island—a charming introduction amid the tranquility of a late September afternoon. My visit continued on a serene Sunday, where I encountered three elderly gentlemen—Antonio, Giovanni Maria, and Renzo—seated on a bench, their combined ages surpassing 200 years. Upon learning I have Sicilian roots, Antonio joyfully exclaimed, "Ah, anche tu isolana sei!"—which translates to "So you’re an islander, too!" This expression underscored the distinctive character of Sardinia, a Mediterranean island approximately 120 miles from mainland Italy, where inhabitants refer to the rest of the country as "il continente"—the continent. For them, those miles might as well represent an entire ocean. My adventure began with a simple plan: to fly into Cagliari, Sardinia's capital, rent a car and explore the perimeter of the island in a counterclockwise direction, prioritizing the breathtaking seaside routes. Swimming, hiking, and visiting smaller nearby islands were also on our itinerary. Sardinia boasts around 1,150 miles of coastline, though accessibility varies along these remarkable shores. My journey continued to the southeast tip of the island at Capo Carbonara, where the beach beckoned with the promise of rest and the allure of picturesque views. Each stop solidified my appreciation for Sardinia's unique blend of culture, natural beauty, and the warm hospitality of its residents.
