In brief
On the evening of 5 July, Moscow launched a second wave of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, killing nine civilians and injuring 46, including five children. The attacks came just hours before Ukraine’s President Zelensky is set to meet President Trump to discuss artillery support. Kyiv’s emergency services are hurriedly sifting through burning apartment blocks, pulling survivors from debris, while the road to the NATO summit in Turkey hangs in the balance amid escalating war toll.
Nine killed in Russian strikes on Kyiv on eve of Nato summit in Turkey
Rescuers in Kyiv press on to locate civilians trapped under rubble after Russian missile and drone strikes killed nine people and injured 46, including five children.
Naval commander Timur Tkachenko reported the injuries, with fire breaking out across several apartment complexes. The attacks arrive just as President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Ankara to secure long‑range missile aid.
Earlier this week, a barrage of artillery had killed 30 more, and Zelensky warned Moscow of a forthcoming “massive strike” on the capital. Moscow claims it is targeting military and energy infrastructure in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy sites.
Emergency crews continue to comb through damaged buildings on Monday morning, searching for survivors amid smoke, ashes and charred wreckage. Ten‑thousand Kyiv residents had earlier evacuated to metro stations as alarms blared, following the night’s siege.
Zelensky urged allies to accelerate deliveries of Patriot air‑defense systems, warning that any delay would cost lives and embolden Russia’s campaign.
