Netanyahu Declares U.S. Visit Despite Mayor’s Arrest Threat

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to New York City this autumn to attend the U.N. General Assembly, according to statements made to Fox News earlier this week.

The announcement came after New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani threatened to arrest Netanyahu under a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Mamdani later said the city had no legal authority to detain the Israeli leader and withdrew the pledge.

Netanyahu criticised the mayor as “fomenting hate,” saying that his words were turning one group against another. He added that Jewish New Yorkers were “afraid right now” after a series of hate‑crime stabbings earlier in the month.

The ICC case accuses Netanyahu of war crimes linked to Israel’s operation in Gaza, a charge the Israeli government calls “bogus.” The warrant was originally promised by Mamdani as part of his campaign platform in support of Palestinian rights.

Netanyahu’s U.S. trip also includes a meeting with President Donald Trump on Tuesday and a visit to the funeral service for former Senator Lindsey Graham. New‑York is not on his travel itinerary, and he remains “not concerned” about any potential arrest.

The mayor had denied that the city had the authority to detain a foreign head of state, saying that the ‘independent legal authority’ to enforce the ICC warrant was lacking. Mamdani urged the federal government to pursue the arrest, adding “Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City.”

The exchange has fueled tensions in a city already rocked by two separate stabbings that occurred a block apart, a crime linked to extremist rhetoric. Jerusalem‑based unions and the White House responded with statements stressing the importance of diplomatic engagement.

With Netanyahu continuing to defend Israel’s actions in Gaza, the ICC warrant remains a flashpoint in the broader Israel‑Palestine dispute, while New York’s political climate reflects its multicultural composition and frequent global scrutiny.
