In brief

Al Udeid Air Base serves as the operational hub for U.S. military missions in the Middle East, coordinating efforts against various insurgent groups while highlighting the integral U.S.-Qatar relationship.

The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which hosts approximately 10,000 U.S. troops, was attacked by Iranian missiles on Monday, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. Known as the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East and the headquarters for U.S. Central Command, Al Udeid plays a critical role in air operations across the region.Established shortly after the September 11 attacks, Al Udeid was originally used to launch missions against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. By 2003, it had evolved into a central hub for U.S. air operations, crucial for coordinating a multitude of missions during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as campaigns against the Islamic State in Syria.Aircraft deployed at Al Udeid range from advanced fighters to long-range bombers, and the facility has become the primary evacuation point for U.S. personnel and Afghans fleeing Afghanistan after the military withdrawal in 2021. At the heart of this operation is the Combined Air Operations Center, managing U.S. air power over an expanse that includes 21 nations from Northeast Africa to Central and South Asia.Since its completion in 1996, Qatar has invested over $8 billion to develop Al Udeid, which serves not only U.S. forces but also the British Royal Air Force, underlining Qatar's role as a pivotal ally to the U.S. in the region. The expansion and modernization of Al Udeid have facilitated operations for various military commands, including those of U.S. special forces. The base remained secretive until 2013 when the Pentagon officially acknowledged its location. Recently, former President Trump visited Al Udeid during a tour of Gulf States, engaging with U.S. troops in an upbeat atmosphere, while emphasizing the importance of military partnerships. As tensions rise with Iran, the strategic significance of Al Udeid continues to grow, reflecting the ongoing complexities of U.S. military presence and geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.
