In brief
A tragic bus accident in Norway claimed the lives of three individuals and left at least four others seriously injured when the vehicle plunged into the icy waters of Asvatnet Lake on Thursday. Local police reported that the bus, with 58 passengers onboard from various countries, lost control and partially submerged in the lake in the northwestern part of the country.
Emergency responders faced challenging weather conditions as they worked to rescue passengers, some of whom were taken to a nearby hospital while others were relocated to a local school for safety. Eyewitness photographs and videos captured the horrifying scene, showing the bus on its side at the bottom of a slope, surrounded by snow and darkness, illuminated only by the lights of the rescuers. In response to the incident, Nordland Hospital activated an emergency alert and mobilized disaster response teams. Additionally, a central gathering point was established to assist relatives of those involved. The municipality of Hadsel confirmed the event, with Deputy Mayor Renate Eriksen indicating that local authorities were collaborating with law enforcement to support affected individuals.Despite being known for having one of the lowest road fatality rates in the European Union, with only 15 deaths per million residents reported in 2021, this tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the risks involved in winter travel in Norway.
