In brief
American and Russian negotiators are set to meet in Moscow to discuss a proposed 30-day cease-fire as military tensions escalate in the region.
American and Russian officials are scheduled for discussions in Moscow on Thursday, where President Vladimir V. Putin is set to consider a proposal for a 30-day cease-fire from the United States and Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov confirmed that American negotiators are on their way, stating, “Negotiators are indeed flying in, and contacts are indeed planned.” This announcement came shortly after a plane linked to Steve Witkoff, a key envoy under President Trump, landed in Moscow from Qatar, marking his second visit in recent weeks. Mr. Witkoff previously met with Putin to discuss a prisoner exchange involving an American schoolteacher imprisoned in Russia. Ukraine has expressed a willingness to support a temporary cease-fire, contingent on Russia’s agreement. According to Peskov, Russia will not respond to the cease-fire proposal until the U.S. provides detailed information through direct dialogue rather than media channels. In addition to the negotiations, President Putin is anticipated to meet with Belarus’ authoritarian leader, Aleksandr G. Lukashenko, for a joint press conference where Putin may address the cease-fire offer publicly. This diplomatic activity occurs amid a heightened military offensive by Moscow aimed at reclaiming territory in the Kursk region, previously captured by Ukrainian forces in a surprise operation last August. With discussions underway, the global community remains watchful of the evolving situation in Eastern Europe.
