Messi’s father Jorge Messi dies at 68 after long illness

Lionel Messi’s father and former agent Jorge Messi has died aged 68 after a prolonged illness. The Argentine superstar’s family confirmed the death, which occurred in a hospital in his hometown of Rosario, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Jorge, who had been Lionel’s agent since the striker was 14, is best remembered for being the pillar behind the player’s rise to football greatness. He was the one who guided Lionel through trials, supported Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario and later stood by him when the Argentine star moved to Barcelona.

In a statement following the death, Messi’s family hinted the father was dealing with a health‑related situation but chose not to disclose exact details. Rodrigo, Maria Sol and other family members were said to have been with Jorge during his final days.

Newell’s Old Boys posted gratitude on X, noting “Jorge was the pillar and the person who supported the career of the greatest player with vision, rigor and affection.” The club’s tribute underscored the foundational role Jorge played from Lionel’s youth academy to the pinnacle of world football.

Barcelona’s official channel thanked Jorge for his commitment to the club, noting he was entrusted with the beginnings of his son’s career and the glorious years that followed. The Argentine Football Association also expressed deep sorrow, standing in solidarity with Messi’s family during this difficult time.
