In brief

The French capital has seen massive protests over rising fuel prices and cost of living turn into widespread looting and violence. President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation from the Élysée Palace, urging calm and calling for a clear distinction between legitimate demonstrators and those who committed destruction. Roughly 550,000 people took to the streets, but police said around 2,400 were arrested, with 1,000 officers injured, many suffering serious injuries. Macron promised full transparency over the police response and said those involved in violence would face justice.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on television from the Élysée Palace, calling for calm and warning that riots must not spiral out of control. He said, “We all feel anger and shame” after a day of protests that turned violent and led to looting across the country.

The demonstrations, which began over demands for lower fuel prices, a lower cost of living and better public services, drew about 550,000 people to the streets. However, in cities such as Paris, Marseille and Lille, some groups turned to vandalism, setting fire to cars and buildings.

Macron called for a distinction between “legitimate demands” and those “who destroyed, smashed and looted.” Police reportedly arrested around 2,400 people, and the interior ministry said approximately 1,000 officers were injured, including seven seriously.

He promised full transparency regarding the police response, noting that tear gas and water cannons were used to break up crowds. Local prefects and mayors were instructed to work together to protect businesses and public property.

Macron concluded that “nothing justifies” the unchecked violence and that those who engaged in it would face justice. The president’s appeal highlights the government’s focus on restoring order while respecting citizens’ rights to protest.
