NEW YORK — A pretrial hearing for Luigi Mangione has uncovered an alarming to-do list and travel strategies that suggest his efforts to avoid being captured following the December 4, 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Among the items found in Mangione's backpack during his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, were notes detailing plans such as changing his appearance—change hat, shoes, pluck eyebrows—and avoiding surveillance cameras.

Notes presented during the hearing included tactical insights, a hand-drawn map of potential escape routes including Cincinnati and St. Louis, and indications to stay away from areas with CCTV. One note highlighted the intention to buy black shoes (white stripes too distinctive).

Prosecutors revealed that Mangione's backpack also contained a match for the handgun believed to have been used in Thompson's killing, alongside other items like fake ID cards and electronic devices. Despite acknowledging the authenticity of the evidence, Mangione’s legal team argued against its admissibility due to the absence of a search warrant during the arrest.

The murder of Thompson, 50, occurred as he was en route to an investor conference. Following the shooting, Mangione allegedly fled to New Jersey before attempting to evade authorities with complex travel arrangements. This included a train ride to Philadelphia shortly after the incident, as well as a Greyhound bus ticket purchased under an alias.

As the court proceedings continue, the focus remains on whether the evidence obtained can validate the charges levied against Mangione, who faces both state and federal charges, potentially including the death penalty.
