In brief
The Lobito Corridor railway, a key initiative under the Biden administration, has garnered support from the Trump team as the U.S. seeks greater access to crucial minerals in Angola. This development marks a shift in America's approach to African relations under Trump.
An 800-mile railway corridor from Angola's northern border to the Atlantic Ocean, known as the Lobito Corridor, was initially championed by President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to enhance American engagement in Africa and counter Chinese influence. Following President Trump’s inauguration, concerns arose about a potential withdrawal of U.S. commitments in Africa as he moved to eliminate long-standing financial aid to the continent. However, recent developments indicate that the Trump administration may support this major infrastructure project. Acting U.S. ambassador to Angola, James Story, announced a three-day tour along the rail line, accompanied by a delegation of Western diplomats. The tour included meetings with local officials and visits to business operations along the corridor. This marked the first clear signal from the Trump administration affirming support for the Lobito Corridor, which aims to facilitate access to key minerals—such as cobalt and copper—vital for the clean energy transition. As Trump assembles his Africa policy team, analysts suggest that the administration will focus on economic opportunities benefiting the U.S. Osvaldo Mboco, an international relations professor in Angola, noted that the Trump administration’s focus will likely prioritize U.S. business interests in Africa, hinting at a potential alignment with specific aspects of Biden's project, especially regarding mineral exploitation and economic ties. This development highlights the evolving narrative of U.S. involvement in Africa as the new administration sets to redefine foreign relations on the continent.
