In brief
In a renewed effort to solve the 2007 case of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, Portuguese police have commenced searches near the resort where she was last seen, guided by leads from German investigations.
The search for Madeleine McCann, who vanished while on vacation with her family in Portugal over 18 years ago, has been reignited as authorities conduct fresh investigations in the Algarve region. The operation involves combing through areas near the Praia da Luz resort, where the British girl, then just three years old, disappeared in May 2007.The Polícia Judiciária, Portugal's primary criminal investigation agency, initiated the operation following a directive from German law enforcement. German authorities are scrutinizing Christian Brückner, a 48-year-old man regarded as the principal suspect in Madeleine's case. Brückner is currently imprisoned in Germany, serving a seven-year sentence for the sexual assault of an American woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, two years before McCann's disappearance. This latest search effort began on Monday and is set to conclude on Friday. As noted in the official statements, any evidence gathered by Portuguese officers will subsequently be forwarded to the German Federal Criminal Police Service, contingent on prior approval from the national Public Prosecutor’s Office. While the Metropolitan Police, who formerly oversaw the investigation into Madeleine’s case, acknowledged the ongoing searches, they confirmed they are not directly involved at the site but remain ready to assist if the situation demands. The authorities are hopeful that renewed efforts may shed light on the long-standing mystery surrounding the loss of Madeleine McCann.
