In brief

Just days after a catastrophic fire killed four and disrupted essential services, a smaller blaze occurred at the Ramses Exchange in central Cairo, prompting investigations into the incidents.

Firefighters in Egypt dealt with a second fire incident on Thursday evening at the Ramses Exchange, a critical telecommunications hub in Cairo. This event follows a tragic blaze earlier in the week that resulted in four fatalities and significant service disruptions across internet, transport, and banking sectors. The latest fire was quickly extinguished and significantly smaller than the initial one, as reported by Egyptian state media outlet Al Ahram. Despite rapid containment, local services are still feeling the impact of the earlier incident, with reports of inconsistent internet connectivity persisting in surrounding areas, even as officials stated that much of the service had been restored. The first fire, occurring on Monday, involved equipment managed by telecommunications providers and rapidly escalated, affecting around 60% of internet connectivity levels according to monitoring group NetBlocks. This disruption extended to the stock exchange, banking operations, and even travel, with travelers sharing images online showing handwritten boarding passes due to system failures. Customers experienced delays in purchasing train tickets as essential services were brought to a standstill for nearly two days.To address the crisis, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly visited the affected site and promised a recovery plan to reinstate full operations at the facility as soon as possible. Investigations are underway by local authorities, though there is currently no official word on the causes of either fire.In the absence of adequate explanations, safety concerns regarding the infrastructure are expected to rise as citizens and businesses alike navigate the recovery from this calamity. The Ramses Exchange, operated by state-owned Telecom Egypt, plays a critical role in maintaining telecommunication services nationwide, underscoring the urgency surrounding its swift reopening.
