In brief

Russian drone and missile air attacks slammed the Ukrainian capital overnight, killing one and prompting mass evacuations. Ukrainian officials report collapsed buildings, trapped civilians and rising injury counts. Poland has scrambled its fighter jets to protect neighbouring airspace amid NATO solidarity concerns. The strike marks the first major attack on Kyiv in more than two weeks.

Russian forces launched a major drone and missile air attack on the Ukrainian capital overnight, killing at least one person.

Several neighbourhoods were evacuated as airstrikes rocked buildings throughout the city, just hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of a "massive" attack.

In the aftermath, the mayor reported people trapped under rubble of a collapsed nine‑storey building.

Poland has activated its fighter jets to protect its airspace, a preventative measure citing the threat of drone and missile attacks.

The Polish military tweeted that the action is aimed at securing the airspace, especially near threatened regions. Poland, a NATO member, is bound by Article 5 protecting all allies from an armed attack.

Traces of air‑defence fire lit up the night sky while drone, cruise and ballistic missile explosions echoed through the city.

Multiple fires broke out city‑wide, with damage reported at an ambulance station that left at least one person critically injured.

In total, injuries have risen to 11 from an initial six as emergency services continue response operations.

The overnight air raid is the first major attack on the Ukrainian capital in more than two weeks.
