Kampala tragedy: Ugandan football captain slain in street gang assault
Ugandan footballer David Owori, 27, was beaten to death by suspected robbers outside his home in the Makindye suburb of Kampala, police said.
Owori was a key player for SC Villa, captaining the club that won 17 league titles. He also represented Uganda’s national team, the Cranes.
Witnesses report that the attackers struck Owori with paving stones as he approached his house, then robbed him of his mobile phone and other belongings before fleeing. He was taken to a clinic, later transferred to a private facility, but died from his injuries.
Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala says detectives are following leads to identify the assailants. She added the scene has been documented and evidence preserved.
The incident has sparked a wave of anger across Uganda. Fans, teammates, club officials, and politicians have demanded justice and stricter action against street crime.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations described Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch" and the national team mourned his loss, stating he "carried the hopes" of Uganda.
Parliament observed a minute’s silence for the defender, urging a swift investigation.
Owori’s murder follows the death of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was also attacked in Kampala earlier this month, highlighting a troubling rise in violent crime on the island.
