Jackie the Bald Eagle Dies After Weeks of Intensive Care
Jackie, a star of the Big Bear Valley Eagle Nest Cam community, passed away on Monday after battling serious health issues. Her death was announced by the Ojai Raptor Center, the rehab facility that had been caring for her since her injuries were inflicted by other eagles.
The 14‑year‑old, scientifically known as Jackie, endured a series of medical challenges, including severe anemia and weight loss, which weakened her body over time. Despite weeks of veterinary care and specialist consultation, her condition deteriorated.
"We have been working with veterinary staff and consulting specialists to keep Jackie stable," said the Ojai Raptor Center. "Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment ..."
Jackie had become a beloved online icon, with her nest on the Big Bear Valley Eagle Nest Cam attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide. She had hatched in the spring of 2012 and, together with her partner Shadow, had been a focal point of the live‑stream feed since 2018.
The center noted that the bird’s remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for final handling.
"We are working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will provide a more comprehensive statement including additional information on her treatments and test results," the center added.
The loss of Jackie has cut deep into the community of wildlife enthusiasts and the thousands of people who once watched her healing journey through the live‑stream camera.
