In brief

As fighting rages on in the coastal provinces of Syria, interim president Ahmed al-Shara has urged citizens to unite and remain calm, stressing the need for civil peace in the face of violence that has left over 1,000 dead, including many civilians.

Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, made a public plea for unity and calm on Sunday as renewed fighting broke out in the coastal provinces, leading to significant casualties in just a few days. Speaking from a mosque in Damascus, al-Shara emphasized, “We must preserve national unity and civil peace,” aiming to reassure the nation during these tumultuous times. The recent clashes erupted between forces aligned with the new government led by al-Shara and those loyal to former dictator Bashar al-Assad, sparking fears of a resurgence in sectarian violence. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, over 1,000 individuals have lost their lives in Tartus and Latakia provinces since the violence escalated, with about 700 civilians among the deceased, primarily due to government forces’ actions. On the ground, fresh fighting was reported as the government deployed drones, tanks, and artillery in efforts to quell armed resistance. Government spokesman Col. Hassan Abdul Ghani indicated that forces were working to root out pockets of loyalty to Assad's military, which had ruled for over a decade. The areas of Latakia and Tartus are home to many of Syria's Alawite population, the religious minority that previously held power during Assad’s regime, raising concerns about the potential for renewed sectarian strife amid the ongoing violence. Another monitoring group, the Syrian Network for Human Rights, corroborated reports that government security forces were responsible for the killings of around 125 civilians, indicating a catastrophic toll on non-combatants caught in the crossfire. The eruption of violence seems to pose a considerable challenge for the interim government, which took control following the ousting of Assad's regime in December, as it grapples with deep-rooted sectarian divisions that have endured throughout over a decade of civil upheaval.
