In brief

A month into a new Israeli-backed aid system, officials report hundreds of fatalities among Palestinians while seeking food in southern Gaza, described as “death traps,” amid severe hunger and chaos at distribution points.

Desperate Palestinians in Gaza are facing dire circumstances as the search for food has become increasingly fatal. Health officials report that since the implementation of a new Israeli-backed aid system a month ago, hundreds have been killed near distribution hubs located in southern Gaza. Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the United Nations, labeled these aid hubs as "death traps" amid the escalating desperation. “The hunger in Gaza is unprecedented,” conveyed Laerke. "When aid is rendered available, it is instantly seized by a starving population. This underlines the extent of their plight." Alongside this new system, aid deliveries by the United Nations and other organizations remain sparse, leading to chaos as desperate citizens violently clash for basic food supplies. Witnesses have recounted scenes of ransacking, with crowds overwhelming trucks delivering flour and other essential goods just moments after their arrival. This current aid system has had a rocky start; it was rolled out only after prolonged delays where aid to Gaza was blocked for nearly three months, starting in March and ending in May, contributing to the already grim situation. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation runs the operational hubs, which only constitute a limited number of locations in the beleaguered region.
