In brief

A Russian general has died in a car explosion near Moscow, marking a continued trend of violent incidents involving Russian military officials as tensions rise with Ukraine.

On Friday, April 25, 2025, investigators confirmed that Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a prominent figure within the Russian General Staff, was killed in a blast in Balashikha, a suburb east of Moscow. The Russian Investigative Committee, equivalent to the F.B.I., has since initiated a criminal inquiry into the incident. This explosion coincides with reports indicating that Steve Witkoff, former President Trump’s special envoy, may have been in Moscow for critical negotiations with President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict and efforts to rebuild U.S.-Russia relations. However, Putin has disregarded calls from Trump for a swift resolution, as Russian airstrikes targeting civilians reportedly increase. The death of Gen. Moskalik continues a troubling pattern of fatalities among figures opposing Ukraine. February saw the assassination of Armen Sarkisyan, a prominent pro-Russian separatist, in a separate bombing, with no related comments from Ukraine at that time. Likewise, in December, a general overseeing Russia's nuclear and chemical weapons defenses was also killed in a bombing, with Ukrainian security officials claiming responsibility. As the situation continues to unfold, both the implications of the general’s death and the escalating violence present deep concerns for international stability and ongoing peace talks.Maria Varenikova contributed to this report.
