In brief
Three days after Israel announced a reduction in its blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza, reports indicate that the promised supplies have yet to reach those in dire need. While dozens of trucks have crossed into the territory, the actual distribution of materials like food and medicine remains stalled due to concerns of looting, according to a United Nations official who spoke anonymously.
Gaza residents, particularly following a two-month blockade on vital supplies, are increasingly facing critical food shortages. Riyadh al-Housari, a 25-year-old resident of Gaza City, shared his daily struggles, stating, “Today we will mostly eat lentils, or pasta. We eat one meal in the late afternoon. It is one meal and there is no other.” The United Nations has warned of a potential famine, with tens of thousands of children at risk of acute malnutrition due to ongoing restrictions. In response to claims about the dire situation, Israeli officials argue that the humanitarian restrictions are strategically aimed at pressuring Hamas to negotiate a ceasefire and release hostages. As many wait in uncertainty, the likelihood of a timely resolution remains bleak.
