In brief

Christina Block, the heiress to Germany’s Block House steakhouse chain, faces charges of organising the abduction of her children from Denmark. The case has widened into a spy scandal, implicating former German intelligence chief August Hanning and a Mossad operative. Hanning has been arrested on treason and espionage charges after police discovered documents tied to state‑secret leaks. The trial is delayed again as new witness complications arise, while the public debate intensifies over wealth, custody, and national security.

It is a trial that has gripped Germany. After prosecutors unsealed evidence linking steakhouse heiress Christina Block to a violent child abduction from Denmark, the case has exploded into a whistle‑blowing espionage saga.

In January 2024, Block allegedly ordered an Israeli security contractor to take her two children during New Year’s fireworks. The kidnappers allegedly beat the children, tied them, and drove them past the Danish border before finally stopping in a campervan in Baden‑Württemberg, where the kids were held until Block arrived on 2 January.

The scandal deepened when investigators found ties to former German intelligence chief August Hanning and a Mossad operative, raising questions about whether state secrets were exchanged to facilitate the abduction.

Hanning was arrested this month on charges of treason and espionage after police discovered documents in his home that point to clandestine information leaks, although he denies any role in Block’s plan.

For now, the trial remains stalled amid new witness shortcomings, while social media debates rage over the intersection of wealth, custody battles and national security.
