The tourist vessel overturned during a thunderstorm with fierce winds and high waves, as per reports from state-run media in Vietnam. The boating mishap occurred while the tourists were on an excursion, prompting a swift response from search and rescue teams that included naval commandos from the Quang Ninh Province. They managed to recover a total of 34 bodies, while at least 10 survivors were rescued from the turbulent waters.

"This is the worst accident I’ve known in Ha Long Bay in the last 25 years,” said Bui Cong Hoan, deputy chairman of the Ha Long Tourist Boat Association. Most victims were Vietnamese nationals enjoying recreational time around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which features over 1,600 islands.

Among the deceased was a family of four, leaving only the mother as the sole survivor. The boat had been returning from a tour of Dau Go and nearby limestone caves when the unexpected storm hit.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered various civil defense units and the Ministries of Defense and Public Security to aid in the ongoing search efforts for the missing. The craftsmanship of local tourist boats contrasts sharply with the fact that deadly incidents have plagued the region in the past, raising concerns about safety measures.

In recent history, a speedboat accident outside Quang Nam in 2022 resulted in 17 fatalities, and in 2009, an overloaded ferry accident caused 40 deaths. This incident reiterates the need for heightened attention towards maritime safety regulations for tourist vessels in Vietnam.
