In brief

The British government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has announced a comprehensive national inquiry into child sexual exploitation and abuse, a decision influenced by mounting public pressure and recent social media criticism from tech mogul Elon Musk.

On June 14, 2025, Starmer confirmed the establishment of the national inquiry during his travels to the G7 summit in Canada. This inquiry addresses the ongoing scandal surrounding "grooming gangs" that have exploited thousands of children across Britain. Previously, Starmer resisted calls for a detailed investigation, emphasizing the government's focus on implementing outcomes from a prior seven-year investigation that reviewed over two million documents and included testimonies from around 6,000 victims. However, following a review from former House of Lords member Louise Casey, who initially believed that a national inquiry was unwarranted, Starmer acknowledged the necessity for a thorough examination of the issue. "She’s come to the view there should be a national inquiry on the basis of what she’s seen,” Starmer stated in an interview with the BBC. He added, "I’ve read every single word of her report and I'm going to accept her recommendation," marking a significant shift in the government's approach to this critical issue of child exploitation in the UK.With the announcement of the inquiry, victims and advocates hope for a renewed commitment to addressing the deep-seated issues of child sexual abuse and a chance for accountability in the face of widespread exploitation.
