In brief

The Canadian government is seeking leniency for other Canadians facing similar predicaments amidst rising tensions with China.

China has executed four Canadian citizens convicted on drug-related charges, eliciting a strong condemnation from Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. In a press conference this past Wednesday, Joly announced that the government would persist in its quest for clemency for other Canadians similarly affected, underlining the critical state of the relationship between Canada and China."The government will continue to engage with China, not only to express our strong condemnation but also to advocate for leniency for our nationals in jeopardy," Joly remarked. The specifics of the executions have not been provided by the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, which defended the stringent penalties associated with drug offenses in China. The news was initially brought to light by The Globe and Mail, indicating that the executions took place earlier this year, based on information from Canada’s Department of Global Affairs. Joly mentioned her and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's prior appeals to Beijing for mercy aimed at averting such severe outcomes.Notably, the individuals executed were dual citizens of Canada and China, although China does not acknowledge dual nationality. The deteriorating diplomatic ties between the two nations have been exacerbated by this incident, raising concerns over the treatment of Canadians in China.
